A 70-year-old woman experiencing heart trouble was airlifted off the Island Tuesday night by a crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, the Coast Guard said in a press release.

Other medical flight services were unavailable because of the weather, the Coast Guard said. Ferry service was suspended beginning in the late afternoon Tuesday because of the weather, which included wind, rain and rough surf.

The Coast Guard said the first district command center was notified at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday that a patient at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital needed to be airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital.

An Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched at 8 p.m. for Martha’s Vineyard Airport, where emergency medical services brought the patient.

The woman was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital, the Coast Guard said, arriving at about 10:30 p.m.

“Cases like these are always a team effort,” Petty Officer 1st Class Glenn Jimenez , an operations specialist at the First Coast Guard District command center, said in the press release. “When the weather is poor and time is limited, we rely on a network of fellow professionals.”
