Regarding the story in the Gazette last week about the bill to overhaul the public records law:
We used to be a nation of laws but are not anymore. We have seen, especially recently, that from the top down there is absolutely no accountability, no enforcement of our many existing laws and our leaders. People we are supposed to respect and trust have abused their positions and powers to no end.
The Freedom of Information Act Laws, the public records laws and even many of our local laws and bylaws are all just non-enforceable, sad jokes.
Every part of today’s society is smack dab in the middle of another repeat of the 1960s revolutions — except this time it is much more dangerous on every level.
I once considered myself to be totally patriotic in every way shape and form and have sacrificed much for our country. Today I am clearly not the same person. I can only see that darker days are ahead for our country which will make the sixties look like it was a horse and pony show.
Today’s news (other than the mainstream media) shows that those in power and those who are seeking the highest power and positions in our nation are the biggest abusers. And what are citizens and illegals in our streets protesting — abolish Christmas, free speech for those only on the far left, free school for everyone, open our borders wider, expand sanctuary cities, open the prisons and release as many criminals and terrorists as possible, especially before the next election which happens to be in one year.
Our most important laws concerning the safety and security of our country, trickling down all the way to local level laws and bylaws, are basically ignored, abused, non-enforceable and nonexistent, making our entire country susceptible to complete destruction. I sadly expect this next year to be one of the worst years in our country’s history.

GOD Bless you Woody and
Thomas S. *** Astoria Oregon / formally EDGGOD Bless you Woody and Thanks! I thought you had left and had finally made it to the RED state of South Carolina. I left my native island there mainly because of those who have infiltrated it the liberals, and illegals. I was very fortunate to know you growing up in Edgartown. I went into the Navy and told you that I will give you are ride if I see you when you enlisted in the Marines.
We were both sworn in at the Boston Navy yard after pushing though all the protesters and that was the last time I saw you other than reading your letters thu my parents yearly Gazettes gift subscription to me.
You are right on the money and I miss your right on Letters! Keep up the good fight!
What Timing for such a letter
Susan Beaufort, South CarolinaWhat Timing for such a letter! I grew up on the island and my parents are very conservative and patriotic. As I grew up I could see the off-islanders who came here year round were very liberal, forceful and treated people who thought differently very badly. I then saw how they all would meet regularly mainly in West Tisbury and plan how to further their liberal agenda on Martha's Vineyard.
I can totally understand Woody Williams's frustration and I could not be happier that we moved to a totally different environment down here and although I miss my friends greatly on the island social media allows me to keep in touch with them constantly and instantly here so far away. People here in South Carolina are so genuinely non-judgmental, kind and pleasant. People here mainly ask me and my brother why do people up north think we are “haters”? I think because of the flag issues.
I say I have no idea how that happened or started but next year I will be a senior my brother a sophomore and I am so happy my parents decided to come down here and start a totally different life and life style.
Thank you Mr. Williams for writing that letter as we can relate to what you are saying.

The island's silent majority
Silent Majority ChappyThe island's silent majority thanks you Woody for your bold on point letter. Many of us who feel like you cannot speak out how we really feel on this island as our jobs and our children's relationships with others are put in jeopardy.
There have been several times in the last few years that my three youngsters have come home from school and say So & So's parents dont want me over at their houses because their parents are racists, homophobes and anti-immigrant.
We initially came here especially to Chappaquiddick because of the isolation and friendliness. What a shock it was to experience the things I just mentioned once we moved here year-round.
The island is not as friendly, crime free, tolerant and as patriotic as the brochures advertise!
Woody thank you for your
Disabled Army Vietnam VeteranWoody thank you for your service to our country and to our island's veterans population. We appreciate all you do mostly behind the scenes.
Great letter, Woody! We live
John Kerrigan West TisburyGreat letter, Woody! We live in very uncertain and dangerous times, and our leadership at all levels seems to alternately ignore or apply the law whenever and whichever way it suits them. There is a level of discord and division today that has not existed in this country in over half a century!
Woody & John you are so
Real Patriot Cape Cod, MAWoody & John you are so correct. When we were attacked on 911 all the liberals and Bush haters rallied around him and bought every American flag in sight. After a few years when things calmed down all those flags disappeared and they all went back to their usual same O same O. I bet they wish they would have kept those flags in their closets because as the title says Dark Days Ahead and all their actions and non actions are making matters worst and guess who the first ones are to run out and buy every American flag in sight once again, yep you guessed it.
We need more of these types
Family of Four Martha's VineyardWe need more of these types of "Letters to the Editor" and quickly. America has lost alot of ground to the uninformed, the PC folks and the unpatriotic. Our values have eroded so badly that the security of our nation is at stake as the above author(s) expressed. GOD bless America.
Well said Woody. With hard
Dee Ouchman Isles of LangerhansWell said Woody. With hard work and faith we will see brighter days in our future.
