The Tisbury Firefighters Association’s annual car show is rolling out of Tisbury to park at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in Oak Bluffs this year.
The show will be held at the high school from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6. There will be food, music, games and lots of antique cars.
Association member Ken Maciel said the move was to accommodate the growing show, and that Main street no longer had the space they needed.
“The high school might be a better location in the long run,” he said. “It has more room for expansion. Next year will be our 10th anniversary and we want to do something big.”
On Tuesday the association sent out letters to Main street Vineyard Haven business owners thanking them for their support of past shows and informing them of the move.
Tensions between business owners and the car show were aired at a selectmen’s meeting last week, where several merchants voiced concerns about the show detracting from patronage on their busiest weekend. Mr. Maciel said the show had outgrown all other locations in Vineyard Haven.
The annual show raises money for the firemen's relief fund.

The Car Show was a great
Rob Oak BluffsThe Car Show was a great event for downtown Vineyard Haven. I'm sorry to disagree with some of the shop owners, but V.H. needs a way to find things for families to do. The car show was a perfect family event. Sorry that some folks didn't like it, but for me it was a great addition and now a huge loss to the town.
While I agree that Tisbury
peter simon ChilmarkWhile I agree that Tisbury can use more special attractions, one that closed off Main Street over Labor Day to traffic affected many of our retail activities. More gourmet eating spots would help, and reburshing Owen Park would help, and a complete makeover of 5 corners including the shabby state of much of the adjoining real estate would help our "port town" much more consistently than a one day event featuring old cars. I wish them great success over at the High School.
I know of a gallery on main
hungry for food vhI know of a gallery on main street in vh that would make a great location for a new sit down breakfast and lunch joint .

peter simon chilmarkErnie still isn't sure yet. But he is working with the town to come up with "something" that will make everyone happy. Maybe a combination retail and condo building, etc, with green space for a park of sorts. Stay tuned!
