The pilot of the Piper Cherokee PA 32-260 was unhurt, but the propeller and nose of the airplane were damaged, fire chief Peter Shemeth said. The Edgartown fire department and state police responded to the grass airfield at about 1 p.m.

The plane had taken off from the Martha’s Vineyard Airport a few minutes earlier.

Paul A. Schneiders of Canton is the owner of the aircraft, according to Federal Aviation Administration records. The aircraft was manufactured in 1966, and has a valid registration certificate.

The FAA was notified, and will conduct an investigation.

Airpark manager George Smith refused comment when contacted by phone.

Thank goodness no one was hurt. The plane can be repaired or replaced lives can not

Hopefully this will be a reminder to the pilots who frequent the airport to be more safe and careful. I have seen at least two planes clip the tops of the brush that run between Katama Farm and Mattakesett just this summer and over the years cannot count how many have done the same. I am no pilot myself but can hardly believe such flying was intentional, nor that is safe.

As a resident of the Edgartown Great Plains, I understand that the airport is as much of a part of Katama as skunks are, but I contest that the airport does not restrict pilots landing to its hours. I have seen many flights depart later than or touch down after 6pm, which is when I understand the airport claims it closes. Just as the FARM Institute's Meals in the Meadow and Winnetu's Possible Dreams Auctions are given curfews, I request that the airport's be enforced. It is not fair to residents to be forced to have their airspace violated when they are trying to have a quiet late dinner, or put their young ones to bed.

There is no way to enforce a curfew at what is called an uncontrolled airport . In fact an airplane does not even need a radio to land at Katama. I guess there coukd be fines but good luck attempting to collect from an out of state aircraft
