The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard has gathered a panel of experts to discuss pending state legislation that looks at reducing greenhouse gases by putting a price on carbon.
State senator Mike Barrett (D-Lexington), the primary sponsor of “An Act Combating Climate Change,” physicist Dr. Gary Rucinski, Northeast regional coordinator for citizen’s climate lobby, and Zaurie Zimmerman, an architect-activist and co-founder of Business Leaders for Climate Action will address how the bill will work, whether it will actually reduce carbon pollution, and how it will affect consumers.
The forum will take place Saturday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the community room at the West Tisbury Library.
A Tesla owned by Island resident Jonathan Blum will be on display in front of the library, and the winner of a drawing will take a ride in the all-electric car.

Ok, at first I thought
Charlie OBOk, at first I thought "carbon pricing" was just another tax. It's not. It's just a way to move the market away from fuels that produce more greenhouse gas. All the revenue gets refunded, but people who drive gas guzzlers and keep their thermostats at 85º end up paying people who use less gas and insulate their homes. Makes sense.
Thank you LWV for sponsoring
Ann Rosenkranz West TisburyThank you LWV for sponsoring this enlightening forum! The explanations of how a carbon fee would work, who it would benefit and the readiness of business leaders to embrace its merits, were presented with clarity and greatly helped my understanding of the whole concept. I hope more people have future opportunities to avail themselves of this important information because it seems like a foolproof way of helping us, and all nations, move quickly and cohesively toward a fossil free planet. The bill, S. 1747, is well thought out and makes great sense.
