Some 1,700 people turned out at the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs on a rain and sleet-driven Saturday to sample some of the best chili recipes and raise more than $27,000 for the Red Stocking Fund at the 29th annual event sponsored by radio station WMVY.
Some 1,700 people turned out at the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs on a rain and sleet-driven Saturday to sample some of the best chili recipes and raise money for the Red Stocking Fund.
Chili makers came from as far away as Worcester to compete in the 29th annual event sponsored by radio station WMVY.
Organizers said more than $27,000 was raised for Red Stocking, the volunteer-run nonprofit that provides toys and clothing for needy Island children at Christmastime.
The Mariachi Mexico Lindo Band provided musical entertainment.
Winners were chosen in three categories.
In the amateur category, Wild Willie was the winner followed by Bob Costello and the Edgartown fire department.
In the professional category, the Quahog Republic came in first followed by the Black Dog and the Ritz Cafe.
In best overall chili (judged by Jenny Johnson, host and creator of Dining Playbook), the Quahog Republic was first again, followed by Wild Willie and the Lookout Tavern.

And all the off Island people who come over and get and get So drunk that when they go back over on SSA they harass the passengers with their behavior and do what people who drink way TOOO much do. The clean up and the removal of all projectile objects is truly gross and smelly. I guess the message is you can do what you want to do as long as it for a GOOD CAUSE. THINK about all the people who get in a Vehicle and DRIVE HOME. The time is coming when the fiddler will and must be paid.
