Sharks Look to Make a Meal Out of Torrington Titans

The best-of-three playoff series between the Sharks and the Torrington Titans continues tonight at home on the Vineyard. First pitch is at 7 p.m. If the Sharks win tonight, they will lock up a spot in the second round of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League playoffs.

As summer heats up, so have the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks. The collegiate baseball team continued its late-season winning ways over the weekend, earning a 3-1 playoff victory over the Torrington Titans Sunday night.

The best-of-three series continues tonight at home on the Vineyard. First pitch is at 7 p.m. If the Sharks win, they will lock up a spot in the second round of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League playoffs.

The team has its sights set on repeating as league champions. Last year, they won the league title for the first time.

And the Sharks roster is well-poised to stake its claim once again. The late-season signing of infielder Luke Bonfield, a New York Mets draft pick, has bolstered the team offense, while the Sharks pitching remains as strong as it was last year. On Sunday, Matt Quintana pitched into the eighth inning, striking out eight and allowing just two hits.

The team closed out the regular season with a 30-23 record, putting them in first place in the east division and second place overall in the league.

My wife and I are yearly visitors to the Vineyard and subscribe to the Gazette. We enjoy all the island has to offer. However, I have noticed there is so little coverage of the Martha's Vineyard Sharks baseball team in your print edition. Having attended a number of games the last few years I have seen first hand that they have become a popular form of family entertainment on the Island. They regularly attract crowds of 500-600 people to their games at The Martha's Vineyard High School field. The price of a seat is less than that of a movie. To say that the price of admission and concessions are reasonable is an understatement. The games are played in fan friendly environment, and start at 7PM. So there is plenty of time to enjoy a day at the beach and catch a ballgame.
The Sharks play in the Future Collegiate Baseball League. It is composed of college players from the New England area. They are very well run operation deserving of your support.
