A quick glance at Ann Markusen’s busy speaking schedule includes topics such as Creative Cities: a Ten-Year Research Agenda, Thirty Years of Creative Cities, Creative Placemaking for Smaller Cities, and Innovation Incentives for Creative Entrepreneurs. In the next month she will give six talks on art and commerce in places like England and Texas, and she will present the graduation address at the Memphis College of Art.

And on March 31 she will come to the Vineyard as the keynote speaker at the annual meeting for Arts MV. Her talk is entitled Artists and Creative Placemaking.

The mission of Arts MV is to increase awareness of Martha’s Vineyard as a year-round arts community, and to stimulate economic development through the arts. As the director of the Arts Economy Initiative and the Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, Ms. Markusen seems the perfect choice for the organization’s annual meeting.

In the words of David White, the artistic and executive director of The Yard, she “is perhaps the leading authority on the economic value and power of embedded artist populations.”

Ms. Markusen’s talk will begin at 4 p.m. on Monday, March 31, at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven. Admission is free.
