Construction for the new U.S. Coast Guard boathouse in Menemsha will begin early next month, the Coast Guard announced on Tuesday.

According to a press release, construction on the new 5,000 square foot single-bay boathouse will start the week after Labor Day. The new boathouse replaces the historic red and white building that was destroyed in a July 2010 fire. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Congress has approved $10 million for the new building, which includes a boat ramp, locker rooms and storage area. The familiar white siding and red roof is also part of the design.

Mortensen Construction of Minneapolis, Minn., will first install a temporary structure to support crane activities, the release said. Large material deliveries will be transported by barge during the winter months and small interior materials will be delivered by road. Construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2014.

Chilmark executive secretary Tim Carroll said the town “expressed our appreciation” for holding off construction until after Labor Day. RDA Construction of Canton, which has done work in Menemsha harbor before, will do the initial work, Mr. Carroll said. Preliminary construction includes the installation of pilings for the building and pouring of the concrete slab. Mr. Carroll said most boat slips will be accessible during construction and commercial activity should be unimpaired.
