Ferry Service Resumes After Morning of Flooding, Rough Seas

Ferries to the Vineyard were back in service late Thursday morning following a morning of cancellations when a winter storm lashed the Island with rain and high winds. Flooding forced the closure of Beach Road from Vineyard Haven to Edgartown due to overwash.

The Five Corners intersection in Vineyard Haven was closed Thursday morning and under water.

The storm brought heavy snow to the Midwest over Christmas and on Thursday was bringing snow and sleet to central and northern Massachusetts.

The south coast and Cape and Islands region saw heavy rain, wind and rough seas with coastal flooding at the time of high tide.

Vineyard ferries began running again at 10:45 a.m. Nantucket service remained suspended in the late morning.

Information is posted on the boat line's web site (steamshipauthority.com).
