An Edgartown man sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Saturday after he reportedly collided with a tree near the intersection of Barnes Road and Oriental avenue in Oak Bluffs.

Jesse J. Smith remained in the hospital as of Tuesday, although a hospital spokesman declined to reveal his condition. Oak Bluffs police said Mr. Smith is facing several charges including operating under the influence of alcohol (second offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violation.

Mr. Smith was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck west on Barnes Road around 1:30 a.m. when his vehicle went off the road and collided with a tree, police said. He sustained serious injuries, was extracted from the vehicle and transported by Med-Flight to Mass General in Boston.

A passenger in the vehicle, James R. Greer of Oak Bluffs, sustained minor injuries.

Police said the crash remains under investigation.
